Mike Williams’ return from being out of the league the previous two seasons to leading the Seahawks in receptions during the 2010 season played out like the script of a made-for-TV movie.

But when it came to voting for NFL comeback player of the year it wasn’t enough to overcome Michael Vick’s prison-to-Pro Bowl saga as quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Vick received 29½ votes to win the yearly award that is presented by the Associated Press, but was overshadowed by the selection of the 2011 Class for the Pro Football Hall of Fame when it was announced Saturday night. Williams got eight votes to finish second in balloting by a nationwide panel of sportswriters. For more on his comeback story, click here.

The Seahawks’ Leon Washington, who returned three kickoffs for touchdowns less than a year after having surgery to place a steel rod in his broken right leg, got one vote to finish in a tie for seventh.

Also receiving votes: Vikings linebacker E.J. Henderson (3½), Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker, Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher and Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel (two each) and Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and Buccaneers running back LeGarrette Blount (one each).

Vick’s landslide win is somewhat surprising because he actually returned to the league last season, but did not become the Eagles’ starting QB until this season. Still, Washington said late in the season that if he had a vote it would go to Vick.

How can Blount get a vote for comeback player of the year when he's a rookie? This is the NFL Comeback Player of the Year, not Football Comeback Player of the Year...

I'm glad Vick and Williams were 1st and 2nd. They were the only ones who were true comeback players.
