The players are off today, but not the boys in the Seahawks’ front office.
The team signed a new kicker – Jeff Reed, who finished last season with the San Francisco 49ers after kicking 8½ seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers. In fact, Reed ranks No. 2 on the Steelers’ all-time scoring list (919 points) behind Gary Anderson (1,343).
Reed, 31, was only 15 of 22 on field-goal attempts for the Steelers last season, but he made nine of 10 in the final five games for the 49ers – including three in the team’s 40-21 victory over the Seahawks in Week 14. Reed also kicked against the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL, but did not attempt a field goal.
From 2007-09, Reed hit 77 of 87 field goals for the Steelers.
He will vie with Brandon Coutu for the kicking job that opened when Olindo Mare signed with the Carolina Panthers in free agency last week.
The club also signed five other players today: tight end Zach Miller, cornerback Kelly Jennings, linebacker Michael Johnson, defensive end Jimmy Wilkerson and running back Chase Reynolds.
To clear spots on the 90-man roster five players were released: defensive tackle Ladi Ajiboye, kicker Wes Byrum, guard Michael Huey, quarterback Zac Lee and linebacker Blake Sorensen.
