Good morning. Here’s what’s “out there” about the Seahawks for today, July 14:
Matt Hasselbeck had a great seat at the ESPYs on Wednesday night – right behind Paris Hilton and just in front of teammates Leon Washington, Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett. But the Seahawks took a backseat when it came time to pass out the awards in the categories where Washington and Lynch were nominated. Mike Sando at ESPN.com has the details. The Seahawks also lost out in the “Biggest Upset” category.
Max Unger, who missed most of last season with a toe injury, is slated to lineup at center this season and the Seahawks are confident the third-year player from Oregon is up to the challenge, Dan Arkush of Pro Football Weekly says in this item. Offers Arkush: “There’s no denying the leap of faith the Seahawks appear committed to on the right side of their offensive line with rookies James Carpenter and John Moffitt already being named the starters at right tackle and right guard, respectively. But it’s also worth noting the confidence the team has in Max Unger’s ability to fill the starting center role, despite his limited play at the position at the pro level.”
Pat Kirwan of NFL.com looks at the post-lockout needs for the teams in the NFC West. Here’s his take on what the Seahawks should do: Make an offer the Bengals can’t refuse: The Cincinnati Bengals claim that they will let Carson Palmer retire instead of trading him. That sounds great, but a team like Seattle needs to make an offer the Bengals have to consider. Something along the lines of a player and a draft pick, which helps the present situation and the future for all parties.
Sign a defensive tackle with pass-rush skills: Last year, the Seahawks hit the jackpot when they signed Raheem Brock and he gave them solid inside pass rush. Brock and Brandon Mebane are both ready to hit the open market, and Red Bryant is coming back from an injury. Re-signing Brock and maybe getting the New York Giants’ Barry Cofield would do wonders for the defensive line in Seattle.
Add two players to back four: Seattle knows the secondary has to play better. They have a great young safety in Earl Thomas and a solid corner in Marcus Trufant, but Kelly Jennings and Jordan Babineaux are free agents and Lawyer Milloy is done. The team likes Kam Chancellor, a big, second-year safety from Virginia Tech, but the Seahawks still need a veteran. Getting a top-flight cornerback like the Bengals’ Jonathan Joseph would be ideal. Maybe the Seahawks even look at the Cleveland Browns’ ‘ Eric Wright or the New York Jets’ Antonio Cromartie..
As for the give-us-this-day-our-daily-labor-update item, Don Banks at SI.com says the threat of losing big bucks if preseason games are canceled has the owners in a dealing mood. Offers Banks: “For the first time in this long and messy standoff, a real deadline involving real dollars that could serve to motivate both sides is fast approaching. If a new labor deal emerges in the coming week because of it, consider it deadline-beating business as usual in the NFL.”
The owners and players are back for today’s meetings in New York, according to this report from the Associated Press.
Here at Seahawks.com, we continue our series of articles on the team’s first 35 years with a look at 1988, when the players overcame distraction and departures and also dealt with a change in ownership to win the franchise’s first division title – and earn the last playoff berth until the 1999 season.
