The greatest player to ever wear No. 96? In any sport? It’s Cortez Kennedy, the Seahawks’ eight-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle and NFL defensive player of the year in 1992.
That’s the opinion of Sporting News, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year – and this week, with a dandy issue that recaps those 12½ decades since the first issue of the publication came out on March 17, 1886.
As part of the commemorative issue, they select the best athletes to wear each number and at No. 96 it’s Tez.
Eight other former Seahawks got honorable mention:
Steve Largent, but No. 80 went to Jerry Rice.
Walter Jones, but No. 71 went to Alex Karras.
Julian Peterson, but No. 98 went to Tom Harmon.
Warren Moon, but No. 1 went to Jacques Plante.
Shaun Alexander, but No. 37 went to Casey Stengel.
Steve Hutchinson, but No. 76 went to Lou Groza.
John Randle, but No. 93 went to Doug Gilmour.
Chad Brown, but No. 94 went to Charles Haley.
Jones, a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, was named to the third unit of the NFL All-125th team; while safety Kenny Easley and offensive lineman Robert Gallery were named to the third unit of the college football team.
Kennedy switched from No. 96 to No. 99 for the 1992 season to honor his late friend Jerome Brown, who got honorable mention to some guy named Gretzky.
