Here are five things to love about the NFL from the second Sunday of the regular season:
One. Matt Hasselbeck. Gone, but not forgotten, the former Seahawks QB was a big reason the Titans upset of the Ravens – the same Ravens team that spanked the Steelers 35-7 in their opener. In the Titans’ 26-13 victory, Hasselbeck completed 30 of 42 passes for 358 yards, with one TD and one interception.
Two. Vince Wilfork. It doesn’t get any better than fat guys running with the football, and that’s exactly what the Patriots’ 325-pound nose tackle did with his first career interception in New England’s 35-21 win over the Chargers – for 36 yards to the San Diego 29-yard line, setting up a field goal on the final play of the first half. And did you see the way Wilfork protected the ball when the Chargers were closing in for the tackle? Good stuff.
Three. The Patriots’ tight ends. Two New England items? Hey, the Patriots are 2-0 and have the league’s top-ranked offense and passing offense after putting up 35 points on the Chargers and 38 against the Dolphins last Monday night. Sunday, Aaron Hernandez caught seven passes and scored a TD, while Rob Gronkowski had two TD catches among his four receptions. In two games, they’ve combined for 24 receptions and five touchdowns.
Four. Charles Woodson. The Packers cornerback is about to turn 35 and is in his 14th season. You’d just never know it by the way he’s continuing to play. Sunday, Woodson spoiled Cam Newton’s rookie-record 432-yard passing performance by intercepting two passes, and he also recovered a fumble.
Five. Tony Romo. The Cowboys’ QB fractured at least one rib in the first half against the 49ers, but returned to rally Dallas to a 27-24 overtime victory. Before the injury, Romo was 8 of 17 for 144 yards and a TD. After returning with 37 seconds remaining in the third quarter, he was 12 of 16 for 201 yards and two TDs. On the Cowboys’ first play in overtime, Romo and Jesse Holley hooked up on 77-yard pass play to setup the game-winning field goal.
