Voting in the opening round of SportsNation’s bracket-style competition to determine who will grace the cover of the Madden NFL 12 video game ends Sunday.
Unless you’ve been blinded by that other bracket-style competition that will carry March Madness into an early-April crowning of the NCAA basketball champion, you’re well aware that the Seahawks are represented not by a player but their 12th Man fans in the Madden tournament.
Tim Graham, the AFC East blogger for ESPN.com, discussed the uniqueness of that situation with Anthony Stevenson, senior production manager for EA Sports.
Stevenson’s take: “It’s the only team that doesn’t have an actual player. It’s the 12th Man, and the simplest explanation I can give for that is to see the Saints-Seahawks playoff game. That’s really all you need to know. They have this unique fan element to it. The 12th Man is legit.”
We got similar sentiments this week from Christopher Erb, vice president of brand marketing for EA Sports.
“With the whole idea about integrating fan voting, Seattle’s just got this huge fan base – this whole 12th Man – and it’s always the loudest stadium,” Erb said in a story that ran on Seahawks.com. “So it just made a lot of sense for us to kind of celebrate the idea of the fans, and there was no better city to do that for than Seattle.”
So 12th Man, take a collective bow. But first, vote for yourselves in the first-round matchup against San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis.
