A recap of the day’s activities at Virginia Mason Athletic Center for Nov. 1:
FOCUS ON
Penalties. In addition to putting together the game plan today for Sunday’s matchup with the Dallas Cowboys in the Lone Star state, coach Pete Carroll and his staff also are concentrating on ways to kick costly infractions to the curb.
The Seahawks have been penalized 60 times for 435 yards in seven games, a pace that will produce 137 for 994 wrong-way yards. The franchise single-season records of 128 for 1,179 were set in 1984.
The penalties that have Carroll ready to throw his own flag are the 5-yarders for offside on offense and neutral-zone and encroachment infractions on defense. In Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, tackles Russell Okung and James Carpenter, guard John Moffitt and wide receiver Kris Durham were called for false starts; while ends Chris Clemons and Red Bryant got neutral-zone and encroachment penalties.
“Those are the ones that are driving me crazy,” Carroll said. “Those are the ones that are totally in our control; that you can just wash out of your games. You don’t have to have them be a factor at all.”
Growing-pains mistakes? Carpenter, Moffitt and Durham are rookies, while Okung is in his second season.
“I keep contributing it to the newness and all of that, but this needs to go away,” Carroll said. “We need to get rid of it.
“It really has nothing to do with your opponent. We have to be disciplined enough to hang in, do the right thing, make the right choices and all of that. That’s something that needs to go away.”
And how does that happen?
“Really, it’s about awareness and it’s about focus,” Carroll said. “The awareness that you have to be intent on the situation and know what’s going on and not let it affect you. It’s about the ability to focus on the moment, so that you don’t get distracted and you don’t lose track of what is going on with the cadence of the quarterback.
“The noise and the other players trying to get us offside, there’s some of that. But it’s really us and we have to take care of business.”
PLAYER WATCH
Richard Sherman. The rookie cornerback didn’t just look good in his first NFL start on the field, the positive reaction carried over the video review of his efforts against the Bengals.
“He played very well,” Carroll said. “He did a very good job.”
Sherman, who is starting on the left side because Marcus Trufant (back) and Walter Thurmond (ankle) are out for the season, intercepted one pass and made the play that led to another by strong safety Kam Chancellor.
“Richard covered very well,” Carroll said. “He took away the deep ball in three different situations, and two of them turned into turnovers. He played a couple of short routes really well and he had three or four tackles that were really significant plays; solid hits.”
Carroll’s bottom-line assessment: “He deserves to start again, that’s for sure.”

YOU DON’T SAY
“They’re already frustrated, and I am too. We talked about that (Monday) and we’re got to put that in the right place and make that work for us and not against us.” – Carroll on being 2-5
