FOCUS ON
Brandon Browner. The Seahawks’ extra-large cornerback drew positive reviews from coach Pete Carroll today for the job he did on the Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald in Sunday’s home opener.
“Brandon played a very good game,” Carroll said during his weekly day-after news conference.
After catching five passes for 64 yards in the first half – including going up between Browner and free safety Earl Thomas in the end zone for a 12-yard TD catch – Fitzgerald has held without a catch in the second half. Some of that also was cornerback Marcus Trufant. Even more of it was the pass rush supplied by the front seven, and especially the Chris Clemons-led line. But a lot of it was Browner’s physical style against the equally physical Fitzgerald.
“Brandon played very solid,” Carroll said. “I think he felt very comfortable as the game worn on with the matchups and with the style of calls that were coming his way – the zone (coverage) calls and the man-to-man and the mixed things that we did.
“That was a really good game for him.”
Browner’s reward? This week’s matchups with Roddy White and Julio Jones when the Atlanta Falcons visit CenturyLink Field on Sunday.
White already has 20 receptions, but that’s not surprising because he caught 115 passes for 1,389 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and 85 for 1,153 and 11 in 2009. Jones is the new kid on the block after being the Falcons’ first-round pick in April’s NFL Draft. He has 13 catches for a 16.5-yard average in the Falcons’ 1-2 start.
“Think of it, every week it’s just monster players,” Carroll said. “It’s just what it is. That’s why the league is so amazing. Every week will help Brandon, he should grow. Obviously the more positive games he can have the stronger he’ll feel about it.”
INJURY UPDATES
Carroll said that wide receiver Sidney Rice (shoulder) and QB Tarvaris Jackson (leg) came out of the game fine. Rice had missed the first two games because of a damaged labrum. Jackson limped off the field in the fourth quarter against the Cardinals, but returned for the next possession.
The status of fullback Michael Robinson (ankle) and cornerback Byron Maxwell (ankle) won’t be determined until later in the week. They have been out since getting injured in the season opener.
STAT DU JOUR
The Seahawks had been one of seven teams since realignment in 2002 to begin a season 3-0 after starting the previous season 0-3. But that number grew to nine teams after the Bills and Lions upped their records to 3-0 on Sunday. Here’s a look at the others who have joined the Seahawks:
